What Is Onam and Thiruvonam?
Onam is the harvest festival of Kerala. It is celebrated over ten days in the Malayalam month of Chingam. This usually falls in August or September. The festival marks the end of the monsoon and the start of the harvest season.
The most important day is called Thiruvonam. This is the tenth and final day. On Thiruvonam, families come together to share a special feast. The festival honours the homecoming of King Mahabali. He is a much-loved figure who stands for equality and kindness. Onam is a time of gratitude, joy, and togetherness.
What Is an Onam Sadhya?
A Sadhya is a traditional feast from Kerala. The word means “banquet” in Malayalam. It is a fully vegetarian meal served on a fresh banana leaf. Each dish has its own place on the leaf. This makes the meal both beautiful and meaningful.
A full Sadhya can have more than twenty-six dishes. There are pickles, side dishes, curries, rice, and sweet desserts. Every item has its own flavour and role. Some are tangy. Some are sweet. Some are spicy and rich. Together they create a perfect balance on one leaf.
Eating a Sadhya is a joyful experience. You use your hands. You taste each dish one by one. You mix rice with different curries as you go. It is a meal made for sharing and celebration. It is comfort, culture, and flavour all in one.
