Fresh Lime Soda in Orpington

Fresh Lime Soda at Crispy Dosa Orpington is the fizzy version of our fresh lime juice: real limes squeezed when you order, topped with chilled soda water and poured over ice.

You can have it sweet, salted, or both at once, and there is no extra charge either way. All three are worth trying at least once.

Sweet is lime, sugar and soda, which is what most people expect. Salted swaps the sugar for salt, traditionally kala namak, and it is what you will be handed almost anywhere in India.

Salt sharpens the lime rather than making the drink taste of salt, and on a warm day it is more refreshing than the sweet version by some distance. Order it sweet-and-salt and you get a little of each.

The carbonation is not just for texture. Fizz cuts through oil and spice better than still water does, which makes lime soda the sharpest palate cleanser on our menu.

It is the drink to order with a heavy thali or anything deep-fried. It scrubs the palate between mouthfuls in a way a sweet fizzy drink cannot, because a sweet drink leaves sugar behind and this one does not.

The flavour is sharp, clean and lively, far less sweet than bottled lemonade and much more citrus-forward, because it is built on whole limes rather than on flavouring. The salted version tastes cleaner the further into the glass you get.

If you were about to order a Sprite, a 7up or a lemonade, order this instead. It is made in front of you rather than poured from a bottle, and you decide how sweet it is.

It is the drink our team reaches for most often when a guest asks what goes with a heavy meal. Sharp, cold, fizzy and not sweet is a hard combination to beat against fried food.

There is no cordial in it. The limes are cut and squeezed when you order, so allow a couple of minutes longer than a bottled drink would take.
