Frooti is the mango drink an entire generation in India grew up on, and at Crispy Dosa Orpington it still arrives in the same small carton with the straw taped to the side.

It is made by Parle Agro, and that ownership is worth getting right, because Frooti is not a Coca-Cola product. Parle Agro is independent, and Frooti is the direct rival to Maaza rather than a version of it.

It launched in 1985 as the first Indian beverage sold in a Tetra Pak, which was genuinely significant. It took a drink that had needed a fridge and a glass bottle and turned it into something you could put in a school bag.

It is a mango drink rather than a mango juice. That distinction is a legal one in the UK, where juice is a reserved description, and it is also simply accurate.

The taste is lighter and thinner-bodied than Maaza, sweet with a tangy edge, and smooth rather than pulpy. If you find Maaza too thick, this is the one to order.

We stock both, and they are not the same drink. Frooti is from Parle Agro, lighter and tangier. Maaza is from Coca-Cola, thicker, sweeter and pulpier. Order one of each and settle it at the table.

Mango and chilli is one of the oldest pairings there is. The sweetness lifts heat off the palate faster than a fizzy drink can, which makes this a sensible thing to put in front of a spiced dish.

It is also the drink to hand a child who has ordered something hotter than they meant to, and at £2.49 it is the same price as a Coke.

It is caffeine-free and comes sealed in its carton, which makes it one of the easiest things on the menu to add to a takeaway or delivery order.
