Limca has been on Indian restaurant tables and in Indian fridges since the late 1970s, and at Crispy Dosa Orpington we keep it because our guests ask for it by name. If you grew up in India it needs no introduction.

It is a carbonated lemon-lime soft drink, cloudy rather than clear, sharper and more lemon-forward than the Western equivalents, and more heavily carbonated. It is caffeine-free.

It was created at Parle by Ramesh Chauhan and acquired by Coca-Cola in the early 1990s, along with Thums Up and Maaza, which is how an Indian brand ended up inside a global portfolio.

It is a soft drink rather than a juice. There is no fruit in it, and we would rather say so plainly than let the name suggest otherwise.

The extra acidity is the point of it. A sweeter clear lemonade gets lost against properly spiced food, where Limca holds its own and clears the palate between mouthfuls.

That is why it has stayed on Indian menus for close to fifty years, rather than nostalgia alone. It works with what is on the plate.

It costs more than a Coke here, and the honest reason is import. Limca reaches us in the 300ml Indian glass bottle, with long freight lines, no volume rebates, glass that breaks in transit and no UK returnable scheme.

Worth knowing that the bottle is 300ml, so it is slightly smaller than a 330ml can rather than larger. You are paying for what is in it and where it came from, not for volume.
