Maaza in Orpington

Maaza is the thicker of the two mango drinks we stock at Crispy Dosa Orpington, and the older one. It was built to be a shelf-stable version of aamras, the fresh mango pulp eaten across India in summer.

It still drinks closer to a thin purée than to a soft drink, which is exactly what it was designed to do.

It launched in 1976 under Parle Bisleri and was acquired by Coca-Cola in 1993, alongside Thums Up and Limca. It crossed a billion dollars in annual sales in India in 2025, so it is no niche product at home.

Like Frooti it is a mango drink rather than a mango juice. Juice is a reserved description under UK law and neither qualifies, so we keep both well away from our Fresh Fruit Juices list, where everything genuinely is pressed fruit.

The taste is noticeably pulpier, thicker and sweeter than Frooti. It is rounder and less acidic, and it drinks more like mango than like a mango-flavoured thing. The brand states Alphonso as the mango variety.

The two are made by different companies and they are not versions of one another. Maaza belongs to Coca-Cola and is thick and sweet. Frooti belongs to Parle Agro and is lighter and tangier.

Most people develop a firm preference once they have tried both side by side, which is a good enough reason to order one of each.

Sweetness is the fastest antidote to chilli heat, quicker than anything carbonated. Maaza is the drink we would put next to the hotter dishes on our menu, and it is a reliable choice for anyone unsure what to order.

It is caffeine-free, and its sweetness makes it one of the better choices for children eating from the spicier end of our menu.
