It works from a plain dosa through to a full thali, and it is caffeine-free, which makes it a straightforward choice for children and for later in the evening.

If your table is ordering across the spice range it is a reasonable middle option. But against the genuinely hot dishes, a lassi or a mango drink will cool your mouth far more effectively than anything carbonated.

There are two sharper alternatives worth knowing about. Limca is the Indian cloudy lemon-lime, more lemon-forward and fizzier than Sprite, and better able to hold its own against spice.

Limca is £3.99, imported from India in glass. It is a genuinely different drink rather than a rebadged version of the same thing.

Our Fresh Lime Soda is the made-to-order option: real limes squeezed when you order, chilled soda water, sweet or salted or both. The salted version has no added sugar at all.

You will find us at 273 High Street, Orpington, BR6 0NW, open ten to ten Monday to Friday and from nine at weekends, serving 100% pure vegetarian food cooked by our chefs from Chennai.
